Michelle Obama had some serious competition leading up to her big Democratic National Convention speech on Tuesday night.

Four years ago at the 2008 convention, the first lady wowed in a Maria Pinto teal dress. But that was ages ago: last week, Ann Romney delivered her Republican National Convention speech in a powerhouse Oscar de la Renta red dress.

Some said Romney's choice of designer -- one that First Lady Michelle Obama has never worn -- was sending a secret sartorial subtext. Can pret-a-porter really be a psychic medium? We're skeptical.

Either way: enter Mrs. Obama, who strode up to the podium at the Democratic Convention on Tuesday night in a pink toile and blue-gray custom Tracy Reese printed frock and pink pumps reportedly from J.Crew, which complemented her gray manicure and dangly earrings. Her best accessory, though, was undeniably her famously toned arms. "Barack knows the American dream because he's lived it," she told the crowd -- and at the very least, our sartorial dream was matched on Tuesday in that knockout frock.
