Trump's Latest Reversal Doesn't Erase His Racist Crusade Against The First Black President

It doesnt matter that Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump finally admitted that President Barack Obama was born in America after five years of leading the racist birther crusade.

President Obama was born in the United States, period, Trump said during a press conference on Friday at his Washington hotel. Now we all want to get back to making America strong and great again.

Trump tried to play us with this reversal, but ended up playing himself. He didnt apologize for viciously attacking the president or questioning his origins. In fact, he tried to blame his opponent , Hillary Clinton, for the birther movement.

Trumps long-held belief that the first black president is not American, and therefore illegitimately holding the nations highest office, is deeply racist. It bolsters the notion that highly qualified black Americans cannot, in fact, be American. Trump, through his support of the birther ideology, is implying that black people are inferior.

We cant, and shouldnt, let that slide.

During an appearance on the Today show in April 2011, Trump made it clear that he didnt believe the scholars, reporters and state officials who confirmed Obamas birth certificate was authentic.

His grandmother in Kenya said he was born in Kenya , and she was there and witnessed the birth. He doesnt have a birth certificate or he hasnt shown it, Trump told host Meredith Viera. He has whats called a certificate of live birth. That is something thats easy to get. When you want a birth certificate, its hard to get.

Later that month, Obama released his long-form birth certificate, hoping to close the matter. Trump was not persuaded, and continued to claim that Obama was not an American .

Trump advanced his presidential ambitions by capitalizing on the idea that Obama didnt belong in the White House. His promise to make America great again suggests he wants to return America to a time when only white men could be president.

He also views people of color as violent : A fake statistic tweeted from his account grossly overestimated the percentage of intraracial black crime .

And lets not forget that Trump wasnt hasty in disavowing support from former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke , called for the death penalty when five black and Latino boys were falsely accused of attacking a white woman in New York in 1989, and was sued by the Justice Department for not renting to black people . Last month, he hired Stephen Bannon, the executive chairman of Breitbart News Network, as the chief executive of the Trump campaign , even though Breitbart is a home for white supremacists .
