If we were to list the most iconic pixie haircuts , Audrey Hepburn , Jean Seberg and Mia Farrow would be at the top of the list. These film and fashion stars sported the boyish crop with boldness during an era when big hair was extremely popular . The look conveyed a sense of freedom that modern-day icons like Halle Berry , Charlize Theron and Ginnifer Goodwin embody with their modern take on the classic hairdo.

"Nothing enhances a beautiful bone structure more than a cute, short haircut," according to celebrity hairstylist Sascha Breuer , who styled Anne Hathaway's pixie while she promoted 2012's "The Dark Knight Rises." "Its feminine, alluring, classy and downright stunning."

He told HuffPost, "The crop visually summarizes much about this trend -- it's about short sides and an ever-so-slightly longer top and fringe, with the top and the sides blending perfectly. In essence, that makes the current pixie crop a comeback of the 1960s version of the haircut, then popularized by the likes of Mia Farrow."

Breuer's top tip to get the best out of your pixie haircut : Don't force this type of hair. Enjoy it. "Short haircuts are very low maintenance. The secret is not to over style. Just simply play with your hair to achieve texture -- twisting, scrunching, smoothing and defining individual sections," he said.
