Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump claimed Tuesday that he and his Democratic rival Kamala Harris have agreed to some key terms for their upcoming Sept. 10 debate.

In a social media post, Trump said each candidates microphone will be muted when it isnt their turn to speak just as they were during the June 27 debate Trump had with President Joe Biden .

Despite Trumps claims, however, its unclear that Harris team has actually agreed to that condition: A source familiar with the negotiations told HuffPost the microphones remain an ongoing conversation.

Harris campaign has pushed to have the microphones stay live the whole time, believing that the more voters hear from Trump, the less they like him. Trump told reporters on Monday that he would also prefer to have the microphones unmuted, so its surprising that he believed theyd be cut.

Both candidates have publicly made clear their willingness to debate with unmuted mics for the duration of the debate to fully allow for substantive exchanges between the candidates but it appears Donald Trump is letting his handlers overrule him, a Harris campaign spokesperson told HuffPost. Sad!

Trump also claimed on social media on Tuesday that the two candidates will be standing up the whole time, cannot bring notes, and have been given assurances by ABC that neither candidate will get the questions in advance.

Trump couldnt resist the urge to aim invective at the network in his post, calling it by far the nastiest and most unfair newscaster in the business.

Our understanding is that Trumps handlers prefer the muted microphone because they dont think their candidate can act presidential for 90 minutes on his own, Harris campaign spokesperson Brian Fallon said of the proposed microphone rules earlier this week.

We suspect Trumps team has not even told their boss about this dispute because it would be too embarrassing to admit they dont think he can handle himself against Vice President Harris without the benefit of a mute button.
