Video Shows Harrowing Rescue Amid Deadly Migrant Boat Tragedy

The humanitarian agency Doctors Without Borders has released footage of harrowing scenes on the Mediterranean Sea showing the group trying to save hundreds of migrants from drowning.

Along with the Irish and Italian navies, the agency also known as MSF or Medecins Sans Frontieres rescued over 370 people on Wednesday after the migrants boat capsized off the coast of Libya. Survivors estimated that 600 people had been on board. Most of the survivors were fleeing war-torn Syria. Their effort to reach safety in Europe ended in tragedy when the overcrowded boat flipped as passengers surged to meet an approaching rescue ship, Irish officials said.

Rescuers found 25 bodies in the water, and many more were feared dead as hopes of finding more survivors faded on Thursday.

The mass drowning follows a string of similar tragedies in the Mediterranean that have already claimed some 2,000 lives this year, according to the International Organization for Migration. Nearly 200,000 people have attempted the dangerous sea crossing in order to escape war and poverty in the Middle East and Africa this year. The risks are heightened by the tactics of the smugglers, who charge thousands of dollars for the journey and often cram migrants into unseaworthy vessels.

Meanwhile, Europe has struggled to muster a response to the surge of refugees dying along its borders. The European Union rolled back rescue efforts last year, but recently stepped up patrols to save stranded migrants after some 800 people drowned in one sinking in April.

We will never know how many people were devoured by the Mediterranean Sea this afternoon, the Twitter account MSF_Sea wrote Wednesday. The way to stop these tragedies for good? The creation of safe and legal ways for people to seek asylum or migrate to Europe.
