Explained Human Rights Science & Technology

Thousands of Indigenous children died from abuse, disease and neglect in Canada’s residential schools.

Former students speak of being subjected to sexual, physical and mental abuse by their teachers.

Indigenous journalist Brandi Morin went to Marieval Residential School in Saskatchewan – where 751 graves were recently discovered – and spoke to two survivors about the trauma they still face.

“He’s a 65-year-old man who broke down in tears, crying as if he was that little boy again and telling me: ‘How do you heal from this?’”
