Calgary has a winter night market and it lives where no one expected. Tonight a once-windswept underpass beneath the 4th Avenue Flyover opened as the Subzero Night Market, with radiant-heated walkways, soft projection art, and compact vendor pods serving hot food, repairs, and crafts. The pilot runs evenings Wednesday through Sunday.
- Where: Under the 4th Avenue Flyover (east approach)
- When: WedSun, 5:00 p.m.12:00 a.m. (pilot period)
- Amenities: heated pedestrian lanes, low-glare lighting, first-aid booth, staffed security
- Getting there: signed rideshare bays, bike parking, frequent bus routes nearby
What we saw
Within minutes of opening, thin steam curled from the heated lanes as visitors sampled skewers and cocoa. A cobbler repaired winter boots at a stand-up bench. A makers table engraved initials on metal tags while ambient projections drifted over the girders.

  Why it matters
Downtown evenings have struggled for foot traffic. Re-programming winter-proof spaces like this underpass offers a practical way to extend street life without waiting for permanent construction.
Whats next
Organizers will track warmth, light spill, and sound against set thresholds during cold snaps. A weekend dawn market focused on coffee and baked goods is slated next.
