More than 1000 people rallied in Perth overnight and more protests are planned across Australia today.
The president's remarks followed days of nationwide protests over the police killing of George Floyd.
The incident reportedly occurred after curfew, but the curfew order only applies to public places, not private property.
"If we want to bring about real change, then the choice isnt between protest and politics. We have to do both," wrote the former president.
The owner of Cup Foods pledged on Facebook not to call the cops in the future and to "handle incidents like this one using non-violent tactics."
The independent autopsy was conducted at the request of Floyd's family.
Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in London, Berlin and Copenhagen over the weekend, chanting "Black lives matter" and "say his name."
The actions were sparked by the death of George Floyd while he was in police custody in Minneapolis.
Rapper Briggs reminded Australians that "we also have our own history of killings at the hands of police."
