Animals at various zoos enjoyed icy delights and sorbets to keep cool as a heatwave gripped large swathes of Europe. Zookeepers also sprayed down some of the larger animals and birds in enclosures with cold water. They were also given ice blocks with a mixture of frozen fruit to splash around in the pools and beat the heat.
A starving polar bear strayed hundreds of kilometers away from its natural habitat and wandered into the industrial city of Norilsk in northern Siberia. It is the first polar bear seen in the city in more than 40 years, according to local environmentalists. Climate change has been damaging polar bears' sea-ice habitats and forced them to scavenge for food on land.
Snow fights and sledding were all the rage across Eastern Australia with wild weather conditions creating a winter wonderland. Damaging winds and large swells caused travel delays across Sydney and dumped snow on the northern state of Queensland, which is a rare occasion for the usually sunshine drenched region.
