21 Opposition Parties Move Supreme Court On EVMs, Hearing Today

Over 21 Opposition parties had on Thursday moved the Supreme Court,  seeking verification of 50 percent EVM results against voter verifiable paper audit trails (VVPATs) before the results are declared, reported The Print .

This comes less than a month before the 2019 Lok Sabha polls are set to begin. 

A bench of the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, will hear the petition on Friday. 

The parties that went to court include the Congress, Chandrababu Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party, Sharad Pawar’s NCP, Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party, according to NDTV .

The parties had raised a similar demand on 4 February and told the Election Commission that the people of the country doubted the efficacy of EVMs and this issue needs to be redressed. 

The opposition parties had earlier sought moving back to the ballot paper system, but after the Election Commission categorically ruled it out, they demanded matching of results of 50 percent EVMs with VVPATs.
