Twitter Isn't Buying BJP's Bizarre Video Explaining CAA Protests

The video shows a "reformed" protester claiming only Urban Naxals, Instagram Celebrities and people with "Islamist thinking" participated in the CAA protests.

Amid widespread protests across the country against the Citizenship Amendment Act , the BJP released a video on Christmas Day, to explain why people were participating in these protests.

The video shows a “former protester” who tells another person why she stopped protesting. “Now I have understood everything. NRC has not been implemented everywhere in the country, then why are they creating so much hungama?,” the former protesters said.

Surprisingly she sounds much like she is paroting what Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah have said about the CAA and the NRC.

Then the woman goes on to say that there are “4-5” types of protesters who are participating in these protests — Instagram celebrities, people who get blindly influenced social media influencers, urban naxals and people with Islamist mindsets. Also, apparently all the protesters want to be “woke” and “cool” for drawing room discussions and new year parties.

She says she found this by “analysing” the protester by herself. The video does not elaborate who this woman is except for that she was once a protester.

At a time when multiple reports of police atrocities are coming from different parts of the country, the video also makes a feeble effort to defend police action saying, “The police also have families!”

There is also a passing remark about “Look at what happened to Sweden” which leaves the mind baffled. For context, Sweden is the 7th happiest country in the world according to the Global Happiness Index 2019, where India ranked 140. It is also one of the world’s most gender equal countries . India slipped to 112th position in the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Index 2020 , while Sweden ranked at number 4.

Twitter users were quick to call out it out, trolling BJP’s official handle for their “propaganda” and the bad acting of the two actors in the video.

Some asked why Akshay Kumar wasn’t a part of this video.

Others pointed out how unbelievable this video looked.

And the memes were hilarious.

The BJP, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have made claims about the CAA and the NRC that have been proven to be untrue. During a speech at a Delhi rally for the upcoming elections Modi had claimed that the BJP did not speak about the NRC after 2014, and that only “Urban Naxals” were participating in the demonstrations across the country.

Modi had also claimed that there were no detention centres being built in India.

None of these claims were true. BJP’s manifesto had made mentions of the NRC and so did Amit Shah in May 2019. Three different reports had shown how the government was building detention centres in Maharashtra, Bengaluru and Assam.
