BJP lawmaker Gopal Bhargava posted a number of bizarre tweets criticising the media coverage after a UP BJP MLA’s daughter Sakshi Misra said her life was being threatened by her father for marrying a Dalit man.

Bhargava, the opposition leader in the Madhya Pradesh assembly, took to Twitter to criticise the media attention received by the Sakshi and her husband Ajitesh Kumar, who had used social media to ask for help.

On Monday, the Allahabad High Court directed the UP police to provide the couple protection. Kumar had been roughed up by unidentified men outside the court right before the couple’s plea had been heard by the court.

Bhargava called them modern-day ‘Laila-Majnu’ and said in a tweet thread that the media was using this case as a way to increase TRPs.

Then came the bizarre bit where he claimed that he believes that the country will see an unprecedented number of female foeticides because of this.

“In my personal opinion, television channels in a bid to get TRPs and make money are doing something that is anti-society and anti-national. Because of their actions, the progress made the last 10 years of ‘Beti Bachao , Beti Padhao’ Yojana will see a setback,” Bhargava said.

“In my opinion, because of this news there will be an unprecedented increase in female infanticide and a skewed gender ratio, which will clearly be seen in social surveys. There will be illegal abortions in nursing homes and private hospitals,” Bhargava said.

Bhargava also apologised in advance for “hurting sentiments” of those who did not agree with his opinion.
