Residents of the western and eastern suburbs of Mumbai reported an unknown odour on Thursday night, sparking suspicion of a gas leak from the city’s Rashtriya Chemical Fertiliser’s plant in Chembur.

This created panic among residents of the area.

An NDTV report said that the odour was reported from places like Chembur, Mankhurd, Govandi, Chandivali, Powai, Ghatkopar and Andheri.

However the police have said that no injuries have been reported so far.

The Indian Express reported the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) Disaster Cell chief Mahesh Narvekar as saying that they were looking for the source of the leakage.

A fire brigade spokesperson said the unknown odour was also reported from areas adjoining the Sanjay Gandhi National Park in northern suburb Borivli.

Nine fire engines were send at various places to find out the source of leakage, the official said.

The Indian Express report said the smell began to abate after 30 to 40 minutes since the complaints started to be made.

The piped gas supplier of Mumbai, The Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL),  after receiving several complaints from different parts of the city, said that they had not found a breach in their pipelines.

“Our emergency teams have reached the sites from where the complaints have been received. So far, we have not come across any breach in our pipeline system which could result in leakage of gas,” MGL was quoted by PTI as saying.

According to a BMC official, fire engines had been deployed across the city. “In order to trace the origin of the reported gas leak, we deployed fire engines at Deonar, Mankhurd, Chembur, Vikhroli, Dindoshi, Vile Parle, Kanivali and Dahisar areas,” the official said.

“A total of 29 complaints were received by the BMC control room regarding an unknown smell, which has considerably reduced now,” he said.

Four mergency vans of MGL were also mobilised, the official said.
