The PS4 is now the second best selling console in the world.

The PS4 is the second best-selling console of all time according to a recent financial report from Sony. With sales hitting 102.8 million as of September 30 2019. To put it into perspective, only the PS2 has sold more with 155 million units. With the PS4 lifetime to date sales hitting 102.8 million, it has surpassed the Nintendo Wii (101.63 million) and the PS1 (102.49 million) respectively.

It’s commendable for Sony to hit this sales milestone with the PS4 , more so when you consider there hasn’t been any major price cut in its biggest markets this year yet. Perhaps it is indicative that consumers are willing to pay for the value on offer what with bundles aplenty.

PlayStation sales in India: PS2, PS3, PS4, and PSP

Interestingly, Sony’s global track record with PlayStation consoles somewhat mirrors how well it has done in India too. The PS2 India sales were close to a million  while the PSP sold around half of that. The PS3 hit 350,000 eight years after its launch .

As for the PS4, it stands at around 400,000 sold in the country . No PS1 sales data exists as Sony only launched its consoles in the country with the PS2 while the company never revealed how well the PS Vita did aside from saying its sales were lower than every other console it launched in IndiaNintendo doesn’t have an India presence  and Microsoft’s troubles in the nation are well documented  leaving Sony the de facto choice for many.

Throw in a price drop exclusive to the region  as well as renewed supply of the PS4 Pro , and it appears that Sony’s aggressive efforts to court developing markets may be an attempt to stem the global slowdown of PS4 sales in light of the PS5’s holiday 2020 launch .

The company reported gaming revenue and profit dropping by 17 percent and 35 percent compared to last year. Furthermore, Sony’s 2019 PS4 sales forecast has been lowered by 1.5 million units to 13.5 million. Last fiscal year, the company sold 17.8 million units.
