Sony Removes PS4 Sharing Options

Sony has removed PS4 Facebook integration. What this means is, if you posted PS4  videos or screenshots to Facebook using the PS4 controller’s Share button or added friends from Facebook onto your PS4 list, you won’t be able to from now on. The company confirmed this on the official PlayStation support website .

You will still be able to use the PS4’s share features for Twitter, Twitch, and YouTube, but Facebook is no longer offered as an option for sharing:

  • Screenshots
  • Videos
  • Music
  • Trophy details
  • Links to gameplay broadcasts

And you won’t be able to link your Facebook account to your PSN account either. Furthermore, profile pictures imported from Facebook won’t be used.

Sony hasn’t explained why this change has happened despite our attempt at reaching out to the company for comment.

That said we won’t be surprised if this has to do with the stigma associated with Facebook in current times or changes to Facebook’s data sharing policies in a post-Cambridge Analytica world. For its part, Facebook puts it down to contractual intricacies.

“We’re working with Sony to finalise an updated contract designed to improve the Facebook integration on PlayStation. While these discussions are in progress, Facebook features will not be available on PlayStation 4. We hope to bring these features back as soon as our teams reach agreement,” the company said in a statement to Kotaku .

Personally, Facebook PS4 integration was pretty pointless outside of petty bragging rights and I doubt it’ll see increase or extended use if and when it’s brought back.

In other Sony news, a PS4 system update which adds Remote Play  support for devices running Android 5.0 and above is slated to hit the console on October 8.
