England's Jos Buttler runs out New Zealand's Martin Guptill during the Super Over in the Cricket World Cup final match.

England ended their 44-year wait for a maiden 50-overs World Cup title by beating New Zealand on boundaries after a tied Super Over on Sunday.

In the end, it was England’s superior boundary count — 22 fours and two sixes compared to 16 by New Zealand — that saw the ‘Cup’ finally coming to England.

Eoin Morgan’s side finished on 241 all out while chasing New Zealand’s 241-8, taking the match to a Super Over.

New Zealand batted second in the Super Over and needed 16 runs to win the World Cup.

Jofra Archer’s final delivery on the blockhole saw Martin Guptill failing to complete a second run and making England the world champions.

“We find it hard to play on wickets like that and today was about getting over the line. Sport is tough at times,” Reuters quoted England captain Eoin Morgan as saying after the contest.

“I was being cooled down by Liam Plunkett, which is not a good sign. I was up and down like a yo-yo.”

“This has been a four-year journey, we have developed a lot... We are delighted that we are lifting the trophy.”
