Reports suggest that civilians and police personnel have been injured in the incident.
"Narendra Modi is not the Prime Minister of Hindus, he is the Prime Minister of all communities in India. He should not make such statements," said Abdur Rahman who recently quit IPS protesting the Citizenship Amendment Act.
In a video message, Akhtar said the entire Jamia community stood beside the students who were assaulted on Sunday.
A Jamia Millia Islamia students' group said they had nothing to do with the arson and violence. They alleged that "local elements" joined the protest and "disrupted" it.
This happened reportedly when the students tried to cross barricades around the Bhikaji Cama Place Metro station in Delhi that had been cordoned off by the police.
JNU students said those injured included visually and physically challenged students.
The JNU students have taken out a march to Parliament, demanding rollback of a proposed fee hike.
Students say they were also manhandled and lathi-charged by the police.
The protest ended after an 11-hour standoff after senior officers assured that the concerns of the police personnel will be addressed.
Family members of the protesters gathered at India Gate for a candlelight vigil.
