Avis E. Hinkson is the Dean of the College at Barnard College in New York City. With a focus on the provision of a cohesive and coherent curricular and co-curricular life for students, Avis' leadership emphasizes seamless delivery of student services while encouraging the engagement of empowered students. Her career in higher education spans over twenty-five years and includes appointments at UC-Berkeley, Cornell University, Bowdoin College, Pomona College, the University of Southern California, and Mills College. With an extensive background in enrollment management and academic advising, Avis has been an advocate for access and equity in the higher education arena. A frequent speaker at high schools and academic conferences, Avis encourages young people to make post-secondary education a priority and provides a voice for the voiceless in policy and programmatic discussions held within the halls of academia. Avis has a B.A. in Psychology from Barnard College, a M.A. in Student Personnel Administration from Teacher's College of Columbia University and a Doctorate in Higher Education Management from the University of Pennsylvania. In her free time, Dean Hinkson enjoys traveling, eating spicy foods and shopping.
