Juri Koll

Director, The Venice Institute of Contemporary Art

Mr. Koll is the Founder/Director and curates exhibitions for the Venice Institute ofContemporary Art. ViCA recently produced the 3rd Annual Fine Arts Film Festival,featuring 42 films about art and the art world in Venice at the historic BeyondBaroque Literary Arts Center. ViCA and the event were honored with a Certificateof Recognition presented by Mayor of Los Angeles Eric Garcetti. ViCA sponsoredand production managed the Trans Angeles exhibition curated by Peter Frank atthe Wilhelm Morgner Haus Museum in Germany, which traveled to The ChabotMuseum in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. ViCAs critically acclaimed Water Worksexhibition, was presented at the Porch Gallery Ojai, then moved the Loft at Lizs,and the Museum of Art and History. ViCA co-produced Water Works II, an inter-national juried exhibition with the Porch Gallery Ojai, traveled to the GlendaleCommunity College Art Gallery. Catalogs were issued for both. His recent acclaimed exhibition, Abstract Never Is, was featured at Photo LA and Muzeumm in Los Angeles.Juri Kolls paintings, photographs, and films have been exhibited in galleriesacross the U.S. since the late 1970s. Works have been exhibited at the Museumof Art and History, Photo LA, The Mike Kelley Gallery, Temporary Space, the PorchGallery, The Gabba Gallery, Kio Griffith-curated show traveling across Japan and manyother venues. His art video projections have been performed at the Bill Graham CivicAuditorium, the LA Coliseum for EDC, Anon Salon for Vau di Vire, Burning Man,the Xenodrome, and many other venues. After graduating from the Cal Arts in 1984,Koll began directing documentaries on major artists and other art world figures. Hehas worked with major curators in their museums and galleries, such as the MetropolitanMuseum of Art, The National Gallery in Washington, D.C., LACMA, and the Museumof Modern Art in San Francisco, The LA Louver Gallery and others. Recently, In The Steel: A Portrait of Mark di Suvero, (1991), was accepted into theArchives of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution.Koll is a member of the Directors Guild of America. Juri has produced and/ordirected over 70 films, both fiction and documentaries. His films have screened inmajor festivals, including Cannes, the Cork International Film Festival, the AustralianInternational Film Festival, and won many awards. His writing has been featured in the New York Times, The Huffington Post and otherpublications. Reviews of his art, curating and other work has been featured in the LATimes, the L.A. Weekly among others. Koll has taught art and film at UCLA, the Academyof Art University in San Francisco, and the J. Paul Getty Museum among others. He is currently working on a book about the history of art in Venice, California.
