See The Amazon Drone That Will Deliver In 30 Minutes Or Less

Prime Air drones can carry packages weighing up to 5 pounds.

If Amazon 's same-day delivery isn't quite fast enough for you, the company says its planned drone service will bring lightweight products directly to your home in 30 minutes or less

A new promotional video released by the company on Sunday shows one of the Prime Air devices making a delivery.

"It looks like science fiction, but it's real ," Amazon wrote in an online FAQ released with the video. "One day, seeing Prime Air vehicles will be as normal as seeing mail trucks on the road."

The clip shows a family ordering new shoes for a soccer match. The shoes are taken from the warehouse and loaded onto a drone, which brings the package to the family's yard.

Amazon says drones can deliver packages weighing up to 5 pounds within 30 minutes.

"In time, there will be a whole family of Amazon drones," says narrator Jeremy Clarkson, the former BBC "Top Gear" cohost who is working on a similar show for Amazon . "Different designs for different environments."

Amazon isn't alone in the race to create a drone-based delivery service. Alphabet, Google 's new parent company, said earlier this month it would be offering drone deliveries by 2017 , and Walmart said in October it had applied for permission to test delivery drones .

However, the FAA is still working on rules and regulations for the commercial use of drones.

"Putting Prime Air into service will take some time ," Amazon wrote on its Prime Air website. "But we will deploy when we have the regulatory support needed to realize our vision."
