Amazon Prime Got A Big Boost This Holiday Season

More than 3 million people joined Prime the week before Christmas.

Amazon reported it added more than 3 million Prime subscribers globally during the third week of December. Customers took advantage of free shipping options.

The promise of free shipping over the holidays boosted signups for Amazon's Prime service.

The e-commerce giant reported more than 3 million new Prime subscribers globally during the third week of December. The company did not provide the total number of Prime subscribers but said it is in the tens of millions.

The Prime service costs $99 per year and offers unlimited free two-day shipping and free same day delivery in markets where it its available among other features.

CEO Jeff Bezos said Amazon shipped more than 200 million more items for free during this holiday season compared to last year.

Amazon now considering handling some of its own shipping The Seattle Times reported Amazon is negotiating to lease 20 Boeing jets to start its own air-delivery service next month.

The company is currently doing a trial run with a cargo provider in Wilmington, Ohio.

Shares of Amazon were up slightly in early trading.
