Anthony Abbate, Cop Who Beat Woman On Tape, Asks For 'Second Chance'

As if he hadn't yet caused enough outrage among Chicagoans, former CPD officer Anthony Abbate went before a judge Wednesday asking for his old job back .

Abbate was fired after a video captured him savagely beating Karolina Obrycka, a 125-pound female bartender at Jesse's Short Stop Inn. The clip circulated widely through the media around the internet, leading to Abbate's termination.

His current lawsuit claims that the Chicago Police Board committed 12 violations in its decision to fire him, including using the video as evidence. He also contests the Board's concerns about his invoking the 5th-Amendment right against self-incrimination (a privilege usually reserved for mobsters) over 75 times in his hearing.

It's not clear what would happen even if the court ruled in his favor, though. Last summer, he was convicted of felony aggravated battery in connection with the Obrycka beating, and the city is forbidden from hiring convicted felons as police officers.
