"She's too aggressive, too bossy... You don't want to be bossy," said a teacher about a ninth grader named Sheryl Sandberg. Thankfully, Sandberg -- Facebook COO, best-selling author and all-around badass -- didn't listen.

The word "bossy" carries an overtly negative connotation that is almost exclusively applied to women in leadership roles. A man is a "boss" while a woman is "bossy." Luckily, Sandberg paid no heed to the "bossy" charge, but the negative messages built into such words still have the potential to discourage girls from pursuing leadership roles. With hopes to curb the use of this word and empower young women , Sandberg, along with former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice and CEO of the Girl Scouts of the USA Anna Maria Chvez, have teamed up to launch a public service campaign called "Ban BOSSY."

In a round-table cover story, Parade sat down with three of the country's most influential women to discuss the negative "bossy" label and how it too often discourages young women from speaking up. Women still represent only 5 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs. And more worrisome is that the number has been stagnant for a decade," Sandberg told Parade. "What hasnt changed fast enough is our acceptance and encouragement of female leadership. That goes for all of us -- parents, teachers, managers, society, everyone.

Rice, Sandberg and Chvez discussed the positive effects of lifelong encouraging dialogue on their careers: My parents elected me president of the family when I was 4. I would call meetings where wed decide things like what color to paint the living room," Rice told Parade. "As I got older, I realized that what my parents were doing was sending messages about leadership potential. By excluding the word "bossy" in conversations surrounding young women and leadership, the powerful trio hope to encourage more girls to pursue their aspirations -- and ensure they'll be met with supportive feedback along the way.

Sandberg, who's been vocal about women in leadership roles since 2010, told Parade that while her parents always encouraged her leadership potential, the world at large wasn't so kind, I, too, had supportive parents who told me I could do everything. But the rest of the messages I got from society were pretty negative on leadership.

It's definitely time to change the age-old notion that "a man is the boss, while a woman is bossy." As Chvez noted, women are ready to lead: "I see girls lobbying town hall to build a safer crosswalk for their elementary school. My world, when I was a kid, was my backyard. Their world is the globe. Its time.
