Presidential candidates in both parties on Monday swiftly condemned real estate mogul Donald Trump 's proposal to ban all Muslims from immigrating to the United States.

Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) denounced Trump for promoting divisiveness.

Former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley (D) did not mince words.

Late Monday, the campaign of Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton sent out a fundraising email from top aide Huma Abedin, who is Muslim, telling supporters that Trump's "Islamophobia doesn't reflect our nation's values" and urging them "to be ready to stop him."

On Tuesday, Clinton herself called Trump's plan "shameful and dangerous," in an interview with a New Hampshire television station.

On the GOP side, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) condemned Trump for "making offensive and outlandish statements."

Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R) similarly called Trump's proposal an example of "outrageous divisiveness," and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) called on all of the presidential candidates "to do the right thing and condemn Trump's statement."

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) called Trump "unhinged" and called into question the proposal's viability.

Gov. Chris Christie (R-N.J.) told reporters that "this is the kind of thing people say when they have no experience and no idea what they're talking about."
