Boise's Anne Frank Memorial Vandalized With Swastika, Racial Slur

Parts of the memorial will have to be entirely replaced at a cost of $20,000.

The Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial  in Boise, Idaho, has been repeatedly defaced with anti-Semitic and racial slurs this week.

On Tuesday, a visiting tour group found part of the memorial was defaced with anti-Semitic and racial slurs. And officials at the organization say they found new graffiti on the memorial Wednesday this time, a swastika.

The site opened in 2002 as a park that’s “designed to engage visitors to reflect, think and engage one another on human rights issues.”

In middle of the memorial stands a life-size bronze statue of Anne Frank , the German-born 15-year-old diarist who became one of the millions of Jewish people to die in the Holocaust . Stones inscribed with 60 quotes from humanitarian leaders surround the statue.

The site prides itself on being one of the few places in the world where the full Universal Declaration of Human Rights is on permanent display. The racial slur, which reportedly said “black people aren’t human,” was found on that very tablet.

The anti-Semitic graffiti was found over a Jewish donor’s name.

Because the vandalism was done in permanent marker, the memorial has to look into entirely replacing the affected marble tablets at a cost of $20,000.

The Boise Police Department told the Idaho Statesman that they are launching an investigation into the matter.
