David Cameron: UK Government May 'Act' Against Newspapers Over Snowden Leaks

British prime minister David Cameron said on Monday that his government may "act" to stop newspapers from publishing national security information based on Edward Snowden's leaks.

"If they (newspapers) don't demonstrate some social responsibility it will be very difficult for government to stand back and not to act," Cameron told parliament, saying Britain's Guardian newspaper had "gone on" to print damaging material after initially agreeing to destroy other sensitive data.

Cameron's government has already proven so hostile to the press that the Guardian was forced to partner with American newspapers over fears that it would be hampered from freely reporting. He has also repeatedly criticized papers for publishing material from the Snowden documents.
