DJ Khaled: Police Shooting Of Unarmed Man In Miami 'Put Tears In My Eyes'

A video of a Miami police officer shooting unarmed black man Charles Kinsey, a mental health therapist, drew a range of emotions from many Americans last week. For Miami-native DJ Khaled, the incident was personal.   

On Monday, Khaled joined HuffPost for a Facebook live stream where he shared his thoughts on the video footage, which showed Kinsey lying in the street with his hands up while attempting to help a patient shortly before being shot in the leg by a police officer.

“It put tears in my eyes, because I couldn’t believe what I was seeing in my phone,” Khaled said. “It’s disgusting, I can’t believe this. And I spoke upon it in different ways. The way I spoke upon it was, you know what, they don’t want us to love. Love is the most powerful thing in the world, and you know what love brings, is joy.”

Khaled spoke of the ability of this love and joy to “unify.” “My whole life and my whole career, even through my music, I tell people: let’s unify, let’s show more love,” Khaled said, adding: “I know love is the answer.” 

Despite America’s ongoing issues with police misconduct , Khaled said he has an optimistic outlook. 

“What’s going on with all that police stuff, it’s unacceptable,” he said. “We want justice, but at the same time we gotta love and come together and bring unity and I feel it’s gonna happen.”
