As a Performance Coach I come across the same dialogue time and time again regardless of where in the world my client is based.

“I HATE my job!”

Me: “What is it that you hate about it?”

“Argh – I just hate it.”

Me: “OK, well you know what you don’t want so what is it that you do want?”

“No idea”

Sound familiar?

So let me try and help you with that.

Firstly, most of us are taught from a very young age that the process of life is this:

 School, University, Work, Retire.

At school we all pretty much learn the same subjects. Then once we become teenagers we are told to pick the subjects which are meant to define us for the rest of our working life.

Our application into University is pretty much on the grades of these subjects and so it begins. We start a job based on our University degree and before we know it we are in the 9-5.

Ok – I know I am generalising.

A few people I know and in fact some of my clients decided after university to pursue other avenues but the point I am making is that we are asked to make life decisions from a very young age.

I was still paying child price on public transport, I couldn’t drive, I couldn’t drink alcohol and I couldn’t vote but I was still expected to make a huge decision on my life which frankly I wish I had given a bit more thought about.

So let me finish my mini rant to actually tell you that ‘it’s ok.’

It’s ok not to know all the answers yet. It’s ok not to have everything all figured out.

But rather than focusing on that you ‘hate your job’ maybe focus on what can you do to ‘love your job?’

It’s all in the mindset.

So here are three hacks to get you on the path to figuring everything out …..you need to know yourself before you can move forward with your decisions.

HACK 1: What is your life purpose?

Yes I know, it’s a bit woo-woo to ask these questions but you need to know why you are here so what is your purpose in life? Where do you want to go on your journey?

So many of us play the ‘life victim’ – yes it is a thing. Having life happen to them all the time and feel they are powerless to it all.

But you need to snap out of it. Everything that happens to you happens because of you.

You are in full control. So if you want to be a dog trainer – then become a dog trainer.

If you want to be a multimillionaire then become a multimillionaire.

I wanted to be a wedding planner – I become one, I wanted to be a banker – I become one, I wanted to be a coach – I think you know where I am going with this…….but yep. I am one.

Was it hard moving industries? Yes

Did my salary jump up and down? Yes

But I am dedicated, motivated and when I took a pay cut I made sure I negotiated and took a second job.

I made sure I was financially stable and I made sure that I was following the life journey I had set for myself. I didn’t have all the answers but I knew I was living my passion- or at least through trial and error figuring out my path.

And looking back, it was moving careers that gave me the experience and motivation to now help others on their career path. It also taught me I had more of an entrepreneur mindset.

So I ask you:

  • What does this ideal career look like? No holding back I want to know what it looks like, sounds like, smells like, tastes like. Yes. What lunches will you have in your ideal job? What would your career space look like? Desk, Garden, working from home, office, plane – the whole works.
  • What would support this ideal career? Do you have a partner, children, are you a carer for others, can you afford to make the jump? Would you need to get another job? Do you need to study beforehand?
  • What wouldn’t support this ideal career? What is holding you back? Why haven’t you done this before? Can you get over these issues? If not, why not?

HACK 2: GOALS – you have to love them

I used to dread Sunday’s. I used to be fine in the morning but by the evening I was starting to get snappy. I would pace around the house whining that I didn’t want to go back to work.

Now what kind of life is that! If all of this sounds familiar then I think you seriously consider what you want from your future.

So, now you know what makes you tick. What you want from your dream life. So lets start setting some goals to get you there.

I don’t just want everyday goals I want SMART goals. I want a Specific goal, I want a Measurable goal, I want an Attainable goal, I want it Relevant to what you want and I want a Time associated to it.

For example, as a coach one of my goals is:

To directly aid 120 clients by May 2017 with finding their career passion which results in their career situation being better than when they first met me.

Obvious goal? – maybe, but in it I have what I want to do, a measurable, a time limit, its attainable and it’s relevant.

So get goal-ing. Having 5-10 goals will give you a good start as to what you want to achieve.

Make sure you also put down weekly goals, monthly goals, annual goals etc.

HACK 3: Finally – Get into Action

How much do you want this? Really?  If you truly can’t see another day living the status quo and you want a change then take this as your call-to-action.

You have your goals and you have a timeline – so now you need to start actually working towards them.

If you are having trouble keeping up with the pace or not convinced about the career choice you have made then seriously get in touch. As a Performance Coach I concentrate on helping people become the best they can be. This is whether you are a entrepreneur or an intrapreneur.

Whatever you decide I ask that you stop being that victim and start taking control of your life.
