Doris Roberts Shared Her Fierce Life Motto With Oprah In 2005

"I don't give in, I don't give up and I don't take 'no' for an answer."

As tributes to the late Doris Roberts poured in after her death over the weekend, fans and celebrities everywhere remembered the 90-year-old actress for her talent, wit and acute ability to make people laugh. But make no mistake: Doris was as tough as she was beloved.

When Doris and the rest of the cast from "Everybody Loves Raymond" appeared on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" in 2005 to say goodbye after nine seasons on the air, Doris -- already 50 years into her career at that point -- opened up about her role as the sitcom's meddling mother.

"It's the best gig I've ever had in my lifetime," she said.

Then, Oprah brought up a rumor she'd hear about Doris. "Have you already written your tombstone?" Oprah asked her. "Is that true?"

Doris didn't skip a beat.

"My motto is: I don't give in, I don't give up and I don't take 'no' for an answer."

Amen to that.
