Ewan McGregor Shuts Down Homophobic 'Beauty And The Beast' Haters

Ewan McGregor  has absolutely no time for the outrage over the “gay moment” in Disney’s live-action remake of “Beauty and the Beast .”

When “Late Show ” host Stephen Colbert questioned the Scottish actor on Monday over the “little bit of controversy” surrounding the sexuality of Josh Gad’s character LeFou, McGregor gave a simple reply.

“It’s just like, he’s a gay character,” he said. “It’s 2017, for fuck’s sake.”

McGregor, who plays Lumière in the new movie, also took aim at Alabama’s Henagar Drive-In Theatre — which decided not to screen the movie because of its “homosexual” elements. 

“I think if you live anywhere near Alabama, you should not go and see this film,” McGregor joked. “What would Jesus think?”

The movie’s director, Bill Condon , appeared to ignite the discussion over LeFou’s sexuality in a recent interview with British magazine Attitude. He was quoted as saying that LeFou has “a nice, exclusively gay moment ” in the film.

“LeFou is somebody who on one day wants to be Gaston and on another day wants to kiss Gaston,” Condon said, referring to how LeFou questions his feelings for the film’s antagonist, who is played by Luke Evans. “He’s confused about what he wants. It’s somebody who’s just realizing that he has these feelings.”

After some media outlets reported that LeFou was openly gay, Condon slightly clarified his statements by calling the moment simply “part of a celebration of love .” 

“But I don’t want people to think it’s more than it is and be disappointed,” he told Variety.

The movie’s composer, Alan Menken, has called LeFou’s sexuality an “utter nonissue .” Actress Emma Watson, who plays Belle, described the moment as “incredibly subtle .”
