$9 Million Later, Exploding Kittens Card Game Begins Shipping

After a successful $9 million Kickstarter campaign, the Exploding Kittens card game will be unleashed on the world Thursday.

Elan Lee and Shane Small of Xbox teamed up with Matthew Inman, the man behind beloved comic site the Oatmeal , to launch a Kickstarter campaign  back in January to create the "highly strategic kitty-powered version of Russian Roulette" known as Exploding Kittens . They far surpassed their goal of $10,000, raising $8,782,571 from over 200,000 pledgers, and now the game is ready to ship. 

After a few hiccups. 

"The biggest lesson for me is that Kickstarter is a terrible place to raise money," Lee told CNN . Kickstarter took $1 million off the top; the cards cost $15 to make and ship, but sell for $20; and they had to up their order from 500 to 700,000. Not to mention international legal snares. "I wake up knowing 50 things will go wrong today. This ranges from mundane things like how we deal with different taxes for different regions, to retail locations demanding a thicker box which doesn't fall over."

Despite all that, a rep for the game told The Huffington Post they are "hugely excited."
