Gwen Stefani Gets Emotional Singing 'Used To Love You' On 'Ellen'

The singer seemed to tap into the pain of her recent divorce while performing her new single.

Last week, Gwen Stefani released the music video for "Used to Love You," the first big single off her upcoming album. It consisted of a single shot of Stefani in a white tank top on a black background, emoting, and occasionally mouthing some of the words of the breakup anthem. It was spare, vulnerable and raw: the exact opposite of the exuberant, even maximalist videos we've come to expect from the No Doubt frontwoman.

It wasn't a fluke. Stefani appeared on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" on Monday to perform "Used to Love You" live for the first time on TV. Her appearance on stage was aligned with the music video's look, right down to the tank top and two-tone hair. The performance -- which is really quite moving -- is above.

We probably shouldn't be too surprised about this new somber tone. It's been almost nine years since Stefani released a solo album. In that time, she's given birth to her second and third children -- and, just this past summer, filed for divorce from their father, Gavin Rossdale , after 13 years together. TMZ even reports that the exes just finalized their settlement . So, she has a lot to be emotional about -- she's channeling that energy into her music.
