Here Are The Professional Women Emojis We've Been Waiting For

Unless you consider "bride" a profession, representations of women in emoji form are incredibly disappointing

But on Tuesday, Google developers Rachel Been, Nicole Bleuel, Agustin Fonts and Mark Davis proposed 13 new emoji professions for women.

Careers from education to music, medicine to law and tech to agriculture are represented. The developers released the emoji at the Unicode Consortium on Tuesday with the following statement: 

No matter where you look, women are gaining visibility and recognition as never before. Isn’t it time that emoji also reflect the reality that women play a key role in every walk of life and in every profession?

Given the fact that women are the most frequent emoji users, and that they span a wide professional spectrum not yet reflected in current emoji, we want to help address this pressing matter of equality.

The 13 new professional emojis depict women much more accurately than, say, the current option of the manicure and high-heeled shoe. In the proposal, the four developers said that they would like to standardize these boss-lady emoji by the end of this year. 

On top of this, the developers also acknowledge the need for gender-neutral emoji, and hint that that might be their next emoji frontier:

We recognize the importance of having an inclusive representation of all people in emoji, whether they identify with a specific gender or not. We believe an egalitarian, sensitive, and compelling representation of gender in emoji is extremely important.
