"James White " is one of the year's underdog indie dramas most worth your time. It premiered at Sundance in January, scoring rave reviews and one of the festival's audience prizes. The movie opens in theaters this weekend, revving up a small Oscar bout for its stars, Christopher Abbott and Cynthia Nixon .

Abbott plays a restless 20-something New Yorker struggling to reconcile his own uncertainties with those of his mother's (Nixon) escalating cancer. Their intimate bond enforces each's need for the other, but don't expect a maudlin illness drama. Josh Mond, who produced 2011's excellent "Martha Marcy May Marlene," has written and directed a rich portrait of the search for stability. "James White" is about reality checks when all you want is a sublime existence, and it boasts a surprising dose of humor.

Watch an exclusive featurette about the making of the film below, and see "James White" in limited release on Nov. 13.
