The 'Heartbreaking Realization' That Ended Jewel's Contact With Her Mom

The singer-songwriter opens up in her new memoir,.

In her new book Never Broken: Songs Are Only Half The Story , Jewel recounts the hardship and heartbreak that filled her colorful life and her rise to fame, and the singer-songwriter stopped by HuffPost Live on Monday to share a few of those pivotal stories.

During the conversation with host Josh Zepps , Jewel discussed her "difficult upbringing" in Alaska. "My mom left when I was 8. My dad ended up being an alcoholic and abusive  for quite a few years," she said. And while things between Jewel and her father have since improved, she can't say the same for her mother Lenedra Carroll, who eventually returned to her life and took the reins of her career before things went sour.

"My mom and I haven't talked since 2010," Jewel told HuffPost Live. "She was my manager, and yeah -- I don't think things were quite what I thought they were. It took me a long time to come and see the truth. It was a pretty heartbreaking realization."
