Joss Whedon: 'Star Wars' Has 'The Guy For The Gig' In J.J. Abrams

When Disney acquired Lucasfilm back in October of 2012 and announced plans for three new "Star Wars" films staring with "Episode VII" in 2015, many fans immediately thought of only one person good enough to bring the franchise back to the big screen: Joss Whedon. The only problem? Whedon's already tied up with "Marvel 's The Avengers" franchise, the second installment of which is also due in theaters in 2015.

"I'm as angry as you should be," Whedon joked to CNN about his prior commitments earlier this year. "When I heard [about 'Star Wars'] I was like, 'I wonder ... no, I really can't do that. Oh, I already have a job.' I wouldn't clear the 'Avengers.' I'm having so much fun with that sequel right now, just with the script, that I couldn't imagine not doing it."

Speaking with Deadline.com this week, Whedon revealed that he had ideas for "Star Wars: Episode VII," but no formal conversations with Lucasfilm ever occurred.

"All of this happened long after I was committed to 'The Avengers,' so there was never any question [about doing 'Star Wars']," Whedon said. "There was just a peep of sadness from me."

As previously reported, Disney and Lucasfilm eventually hired J.J. Abrams for the job, a move Whedon feels will pay off. "I think, in all honesty, that J.J. Abrams is the guy for the gig and I couldn't be happier about that," he told Deadline.com.
