Julianne Hough Apologizes For Blackface Costume, Is Sorry She Offended People

Julianne Hough took to Twitter Saturday to apologize for her controversial blackface Halloween costume .

On Friday (Oct. 25), Hough dressed as "Crazy Eyes" -- a character played by African-American actress Uzo Aduba -- from the hit Netflix series "Orange Is the New Black" for the Casamigos Tequila Halloween party in Hollywood. She wore orange prison garb, a "Crazy Eyes" ID badge, bantu knots in her hair and blackface makeup.

It goes without saying that the get-up has since drawn criticism for its offensive nature. Hough eventually apologized in a tweet .

Her full statement , posted on TwitLong, read:

"I am a huge fan of the show 'Orange is the New black,' actress Uzo Aduba, and the character she has created. It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize."

A rep for the 25-year-old star could not be immediately reached for further comment on the matter.

Hough's apology didn't diffuse the issue, however.

"You wore blackface -- which has historically been used to disrespect and demean black people for centuries, which was quite literally invented as a method of disrespecting and demeaning black people -- but had no intention of being disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way," wrote Jezebel's Callie Beusman. "OH, OKAY."
