Kacey Musgraves Song Miserable Leaves You Anything But

Even if you were living under a soundproof rock for the past few years, it'd be hard to miss the rise of country singer Kacey Musgraves. The 26-year-old singer brought a much-welcomed fresh attitude with 2013's "Same Trailer, Different Park," performing her be-yourself anthem, "Follow Your Arrow," at the 2014 Grammy Awards, where she nabbed Best Country Song before the night was over. She pleased die-hard country fans and pop lovers alike with a crossover power we haven't seen this side of Taylor Swift .

Musgraves continues to charm  on her follow-up album, "Pageant Material," released by Mercury Nashville on June 23 this year. HuffPost Entertainment has the exclusive video from Musgraves' record label about how the quiet, cutting tune "Miserable" came to be. The tune was originally shelved during the recording process, only to be brought out again when the singer realized there was something there.

"It's about the idea of someone not being happy with what they have, and kinda wanting to selfishly bring you down with them," Musgraves says in the video. 

 A low-key foil for the more crowd-pleasing "Biscuits" or "Dimestore Cowgirl" on Musgraves' second album, "Miserable" delivers her incisive, smart lines in a toned-down way. It's a tactic that makes the lyrics -- "If misery loves company, then I can't keep you company no more" -- cut just a little deeper. One can imagine delivering these lines to a friend who can't stop complaining or a family member who's never satisfied. "Miserable" delivers the sentiment in a whisper, not a roar, which lets us listen in all the closer.
