A photograph of an emotional Luis Gutierrez, tears visible on his face, was one of the most widely circulated images on Wednesday following the mass shooting at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, California.

Gutierrez’s wife, who works at the center, was in the building when the shooters began their rampage. He says she called him after managing to barricade herself in a room with colleagues.

While he was on the call, he heard screaming.

"I didn't know what was going on,” Gutierrez told NBC News. “All I heard was, ‘There's a shooter at work .’”

According to Gutierrez, his wife spotted a man wearing all black and wielding a “big gun.” Terrified, she and a group of co-workers pushed desks up against a door to prevent the shooter from coming in.

In an interview with The Los Angeles Times, Gutierrez described the moments of terror.

“She was just freaking out,” he told the news outlet.

When the shooting stopped, 14 people were dead and another 17 were injured . The attack, said to be the 355th mass shooting in the U.S. in 336 days , unfolded during a holiday party.
