Martin Sheen is recovering from quadruple bypass surgery, his son Emilio Estevez announced via social media this week.

Estevez described the surgery , which involves rerouting blood flow to the heart, as "very successful" and expects his 75-year-old father to be home by Christmas.

"The decision to operate on his heart was a proactive one, not an emergency situation," Estevez wrote on Facebook .

Estevez later tweeted out a photo of Sheen in the hospital, touting a heart-shaped pillow and giving a thumbs up.

Sheen has a long history of heart troubles: He suffered a heart attack before he turned 40, on the set of "Apocalypse Now."

The actor has been working in Hollywood for nearly 60 years and is perhaps best known to current audiences for his portrayal of President Josiah Bartlet in "The West Wing."

He is currently one of the stars of the Netflix comedy "Grace and Frankie," playing a divorce lawyer who leaves his wife to start a relationship with another man. Netflix renewed the series for a third season last week; Estevez said on Facebook that he would be "be 100 [percent] by the time he returns to work on season three" in early in 2016.
