Sanjoy

Music is one of the most influential forms of art and often has a motley of cultures embedded into it. Sanjoy, a Bangladesh-born, California-raised musician weaves his own background into his music and defines a new presence and vision in the music industry.

As a result of xenophobia and discrimination, Sanjoy and his family moved to the United States when he was 11 years old. However, music was a strong influence and a constant in his life ever since he was 3 years old. Trained in Indian classical music, Sanjoy explains that he never found any other outlet that allowed him to express himself as much as music had. I was gifted a laptop for my 13th birthday and thats when I discovered the DAW Reason. Ive never stopped making music since then and now were here, he says. His music now, though classified as dance music, has cultural influences and leans towards a pop sound due to its heavy use of vocals.

In terms of who he looks up to, Sanjoys influences include Yanni, Hans Zimmer, AR Rahman, and Skrillex. Another key influence is his multi-cultural background, which shapes him as both a musician and a person. The melodies and harmonies I create while writing music and my choice of instruments are definitely influenced from the music I grew up listening to. You can hear an eastern touch in my music and my cultural influences are what sets my music apart from others and makes my sound unique. When asked what made him want to make music and then enter the industry himself, Sanjoy talks about how he never imagined himself as an artist. I was always really in love with playing and learning music. Music was the only thing I looked forward to everyday and I wasnt really interested in playing games or sports, he declares. Although his family has been supportive, he adds that there has always been a level of pressure to pick a more reliable and traditional career. When he initially began, Sanjoy didnt have a solid social media presence. He says that he eventually gained ground, thanks to his family and friends, and was able to pave his way as an artist. Going into the business proved to be tough, however, as it was a more experimental process. Sanjoy admits that he had to learn to navigate the industry himself, and despite having a supportive team, financing, and deals, theyve been in first gear ever since the beginning.

Ive been fortunate enough to have a solid team supporting me and pushing me to do my absolute best on every project we release.

Sanjoys upcoming music is mostly single releases, for the time being. He explains that he likes taking his time with his music, experimenting with writing, sound designing, production processes, and vocals. This process takes time but gives everyone time to really grow with the song, he further explains, emphasizing how much he truly cares about his art.

Q: Are there any collaborations we can look forward to hearing?
A: I just released my first single of 20s17 with Elliott Yamin. Hes one of my favorite singers and the response has been amazing! Each song will likely have a collaborator which lets listeners get a bit of a different feel. Im currently working on a couple of singles and through my current single with Elliott and the new situation with Sony Music, a lot of doors have opened in terms of potential collaborators, its a really exciting time right now!

Sanjoy has reached an impressive level of success so far, traveling the world and performing in places such as Australia, the United States, Canada, India, Dubai, and Amsterdam. Hes overwhelmed by the response in India, since his music combines Bollywood sound with EDM. Excited, he states, My signature Bollywood sound combined with EDM sets react very well in India, which I especially love because I get to showcase Bollywood in an insanely different way. Many of my friends are singers over there as well, so its great to be able to collaborate with them on stage and blow peoples minds. However, he focuses heavily on music influenced by the western world, as it helps him connect with the people he grew up with. Im able to really interact with fans onstage just as if theyre friends Ive grown up with. We come from different backgrounds but grew up in the same location, he adds.
