MTV Airs Its Proudest LGBT Moments

Just in time for Pride Month, MTV is offering a blast to the past with a look at some of its best and most memorable lesbian , gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) moments from its long, queer-friendly history.

The “Proudest Moments” special, which airs Saturday, June 4, will highlight outstanding, controversial and unforgettable events that have aired on the network over the years, including Pedro Zamora’s history-making coming out as HIV-positive on “The Real World: San Francisco” in 1994. 

“Pedro Zamora represented a lot for me,” Wilson Cruz, star of the beloved “My So-Called Life” reveals in the special. “He was an openly gay latino man on television and it made me feel a little less lonely. Beyond that he was so willing to be vulnerable and honest in the face of so many obstacles. To speak so freely and openly about his own HIV status was important for our community to really educate us and bring awareness to the issues. MTV was willing to have a conversation to no other network really at the time was willing to have.”
