The room is dimly lit and smoke wafts through the air as an acoustic guitar plays and a voice sings into a mic. There is nothing but good vibes, good music and good people. This is the New York City underground music scene of the 90s and early 2000s. When you could walk into a club and see anyone from Quest Love, Erykah Badu to Bilal rocking out on stage or in the crowd vibing. Think "Village Underground" and you'll have the feel of "Sounds Of Brooklyn," a monthly, live music showcase of amazing talent, with good vibes and great people. Who knew that these two Alabama natives would connect all the way in New York City over their love of music?

Sounds of Brooklyn Creators: Kerry Marshall and Lori Rounsavall

George Myrie

While in the military living through the horrors of combat arms, Kerry Marshall found solace and escape with his acoustic guitar. After leaving the service he moved to LA to pursue his love of music and after a period of sleeping on couches and in his car, Marshall found success playing with huge stars like Ty Dolla $ign, Musiq Soulchild, Ledesi and Jason Derulo. In fact it was during one of his trips to the east coast, while touring with Derulo, that he was introduced to Lori Rounsavall, a New York City Based interior designer with a passion for music and bringing people together. Living among all the culture and the growing night scene of Brooklyn, Lori found that it was lacking in the live music department.

After discovering they were both natives of Alabama and knew many of the same people, the two began talking and their passion, with a bit of collaboration birthed a project near and dear to their hearts. Sounds of Brooklyn is a monthly showcase that welcomes singers, poets, comedians and all categories of artists, to their stage, to do what they love. Sounds of Brooklyn was created because of a strong desire to provide a place, for those who werent exactly sure where to start, to strut their stuff. Theyve had various established artists and novices come and grace their stage and its only just begun.

Follow them on Facebook and Instagram to find out when and where they will be hosting live performances next as they continue to celebrate their one year anniversary!
