First, let me be honest. I boycotted the Oscars last year as I was fed up with the lack of diversity among the nominees. However, after the nominees for the 2017 Oscars were announced, I decided to give the Academy another chance. There was a record number of Black actors, actresses, directors, and films nominated for awards this year so I had to show my support. After watching what felt like a 5 hour show and much deliberation, I have broken down what I consider the Good, the Bad, and the Unbelievably Unattractive moments from the 2017 Oscars.

Lets start with the GOOD, shall we?........

The very poignant, well-written film, Moonlight, winning the Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.

The cast of Hidden Figures and all of their black girl magic introducing Katherine Johnson...hidden no longer!

The courageous and talented Michael J. Fox. Period.

Politics also took center stage last night. Many of the attendees shared their disdain for the ridiculous policies that are currently being implemented in our country and I was here for it!

Now onto the BAD......

Some of the Oscar speeches were, well, less than stellar. Honestly, Viola Davis should teach a class on how to write and give an acceptance speech. Her speech was engaging and inspirational to say the least. My eyes were glued to the tv the entire time and I was close to doing the Viola-Davis-Oscar-winning-snot-nose-Fences-cry towards the end.

The Oscars were way too long. I almost fell asleep 3 times. And to make matters worse, while I was trying to stay awake to see who won the Best Actor and Best Picture Awards, John Legend started performing. Dont get me wrong, I love John Legend but that was not the time to hit me with a soft bedtime ballad. The struggle to stay awake was real.

One of the best movies of the year, Hidden Figures, was shut out. I have two questions, why wasnt Viola Davis nominated for Best Actress? And why wasnt Taraji P. Henson nominated for an award? Though I am pleased that so many Black women were recognized for their brilliant performances, it didnt go unnoticed that they were all competing for the SAME award. Surely one of those ladies, ahem, Viola or Taraji P. Henson, gave a Best Actress nomination-worthy performance.

We are still celebrating first. The Oscars have been in existence since 1929 yet we are still celebrating first.

Yes, we are still celebrating the first black woman to do this and the first black Muslim to do that. If that doesnt confirm the need for inclusivity and diversity in Hollywood, I dont know what does.

And to top off the Bad list, not only was Denzel Washington slighted in the Best Actor category once again but he was also overlooked for Best Director. He wasnt even nominated! Sorry but the Academy got it wrong. Im not saying that Casey Affleck did not give an excellence performance in Manchester by the Sea; however, it is hard to believe that any performance could top Denzel Washingtons portrayal of Troy Maxson in Fences.

Speaking of Casey Affleck, does anyone else find it interesting that he was not villainized for the sexual assualt allegations against him yet Nate Parker was dragged through the mud and the film, Birth of a Nations success undoubtedly suffered as a result of the allegations he faced 17 years ago? If that isnt privilege personified, I dont know what is. But I digress. Back to the ultimate Oscar snub, I admittedly threw my remote on the floor after Denzels name wasnt called for Best Actor (only to pick it up before they announced the winner for Best Picture, only to throw it back down when La La Land was accidentally announced, only to snatch it back up when it was revealed that Moonlight was the true winner). Whew! Talk about an emotional rollercoaster!

And finally, the Unbelievably Unattractive moments from last nights Oscars.....

Faye Dunaway announcing La La Land as the winner for Best Picture when it wasnt.

My reaction after Warren Beattys explanation......

I understand that mistakes happen and I do not think it was intentional, however, I still have so many unanswered questions. How and why did this massive blunder occur? Why did it take so long to correct it? Couldnt someone have run onto the stage with the correct card before all 50 cast and crew members from La La Land made it to the stage and began giving their acceptance speeches? Why didnt Warren just say, Hey, they gave me the wrong card? Why didnt Faye Dunaway actually take the time to read the card? And lastly, why is Best Picture written so damn small? Just why?!

Anyway, the Producer of La La Land is truly a class act in my opinion. Kudos to him for announcing that Moonlight actually won the award (he didnt have to snatch the card out of poor Warrens hand though), which leads me to the last unbelievably unattractive moment of the night...when Jimmy Kimmel suggested that the cast and crew from La La Land just keep the awards for Best Picture. Was he joking? Excuse me, but they did not win so why would they keep the awards? Have several seats, sir.

So, thats itthe good, the bad, and the unbelievably unattractive moments from the 2017 Oscars. Overall, the Academy has made an effort to be more inclusive and I appreciate it but there is still room for growth. Well see what the 2018 Oscars bring!
