"There is one thing you can do. Fight, fight, oppose, oppose."

Patrick Stewart is gearing up for a new battle but this one will take place off the screen.

The “X-Men” star said on “The View ” on Thursday that he is becoming an American citizen so he can fight President Donald Trump .

Stewart, who is promoting the new film “Logan ,” was asked the explain what he had called “a fairly innocent tweet” last month:

”I did not directly insult your president,” he said.

“Not mine,” co-host Whoopi Goldberg interjected to applause.

“He’s not mine either,” Stewart said, since he is a British citizen. “We have our own problems. We have Brexit.”

Then he added:

“I’m not a citizen. However, there is, maybe it’s the only good thing as the result of this election: I am now applying for citizenship because I want to be an American too, because all of my friends in Washington said, ‘There is one thing you can do. Fight, fight, oppose, oppose.’ But I can’t do it because I’m not a citizen.”

It’s not clear if he’s applied yet, or was referring to plans to apply in the future.

Stewart has been vocal in his opposition to Trump both during the campaign and since
