Rand Paul Thinks Deciding Between Politics And Medicine Is A 'Trick Question'

Sen. Rand Paul's (R-Ky.) first passion wasn't politics.

Before first running for Senate in 2010, Paul practiced ophthalmology for nearly 20 years -- a practice he has continued in his off-time, and one to which he plans to return "at some point ."

This month's congressional recess allowed Paul to do just that. On Tuesday, Paul donned his scrubs and performed cataract surgery pro bono on needy Kentuckians.

When asked whether he had a preference between politics and optics, Paul struggled to answer.

"Is that a trick question? It's a lot different. This is more immediate. You diagnose the problem and then you fix it, and people do see better," Paul told WHAS . "In politics, we diagnose the problem correctly, but sometimes we misapply and give the wrong solution, or no solution at all. So, this is a good reprieve from Washington. We know what we need to do and most people will get better vision from this.
