3 Easy Ways To Stop Wasting So Much Food

Embrace the bulk bins.

As part of HuffPost’s “Reclaim ” project, HuffPost Taste will focus the entire month of July on simple ways you can reduce food waste in your own home.

Twenty pounds of food gets thrown out every month in your household, and there’s something you can do to stop it. Sustainability expert Justin Kacer gives three tips on how to reduce waste in your kitchen, and they’re all super easy to do.

1. Store things the right way. We’ve been over this before, but we’ll say it again: don’t store veggies with fruit . The fruits will make the vegetables ripen too quickly. Also, store herbs in water like you would fresh-cut flowers, not in plastic bags, to extend their shelf life.

2. Buy frozen. Freezer produce is picked at peak ripeness, and it is cheaper. Plus, there’s no risk of it spoiling in your freezer.

3. Shop in bulk. It’s time to embrace the bulk bins. You’ll get just the amount you need, save, and reduce the waste inherent in packaging, too.

Simple, right? Watch the video above to hear more details from the expert’s mouth.
