Republican Convention Roars Approval Of Baltimore Officer's Acquittal In Freddie Gray Death

A somber moment is turned into an applause line.

CLEVELAND During the 2012 presidential campaign, Republican voters made news by booing a veteran who asked at a debate about protections for members of the LGBT community serving in the armed forces, by cheering Rick Perry for the sky-high number of Texas executions, and alternately booing him for suggesting that it was compassionate to educate the children of undocumented immigrants.

On Monday at the 2016 Republican National Convention , many of those same voters roared their approval at the not-guilty verdict rolled out earlier in the day in the trial of a Baltimore police lieutenant charged in the death of Freddie Gray.

Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke, who earlier got into it with Don Lemon on CNN , celebrated the acquittal to start his speech to the convention Monday night. Given Clarke’s record, it wasn’t surprising.

Nor was the response of the crowd, which you can watch in the video above.
