Last night was a big night in Alabamas history. For the first time in 25 years, a Democrat has filled a senate seat in a deeply red state.

I keep hearing and reading that the people of Alabama did the right thing. Stop. This is not correct. The African Americans in Alabama did the right thing. They carried the vote. What is disturbing to me, is how many people still voted for Roy Moore. I will not say Im proud of Alabama, but I will say, Im proud of the African Americans, many of them women, who turned out in droves to use their voice. They, were on the right side of history yesterday.

Democrats and liberals nationwide (including myself) were celebrating the sweetness of the Republican defeat. For the first time in 11 months, I actually felt hopeful.

But the work is not done. Now, we must really focus on the future and moving forward. How will we start to defeat and unseat the Republicans in 2018 and 2020. What is our next game plan and how have we learned from past failures? As a minority woman, now is the time to really urge minorities and minority women, to use their voices and to get out in vote. To show them that they do matter and that their voices have power.

On a final note, congratulations Alabama and thank you to the African American communities who got out and voted, despite the voter suppression obstacles. To Roy Moore, who called Asians and Native Americans yellows and reds, this Asian woman couldnt be happier that you lost, you do not deserve to hold a government seat or represent this country, when you have distorted, racist, and deeply offensive ignorant views.
