Ousted Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley’s sex scandal is showing the world something his constituents have known for years: His “excellent” resemblance to Mr. Burns, the evil billionaire on “The Simpsons.”

Alabama residents have joked about the resemblance since Bentley’s election in 2011, though an AL.com columnist described the governor’s persona as more akin to a “xenophobic Mr. Rogers.”

Bentley  resigned on Monday after pleading guilty to two counts of violating campaign finance rules. Alabama’s Ethics Commission announced Wednesday that it found “probable cause” to believe Bentley misused state resources to cover up an affair with his former top aide, Rebekah Caldwell Mason, 45. He also was accused of spending campaign cash to pay for Mason’s legal fees .

News of the resignation is raising Bentley’s profile beyond Alabama’s state capital of Montgomery to people typically more interested in a different Montgomery: C. Montgomery Burns.

Smithers, release the hounds!
